Start the DBS checks first. CQC's DBS page says a certificate can take up to 60 working days, and the application cannot be submitted without it.
CQC's three pages give three figures: "usually around 14 days but can take longer" (homecare before-you-apply page, 7 January 2026), "usually take up to 60 days" (register as a provider, 25 August 2026) and "up to 60 working days" (DBS checks page, 19 December 2025). Plan for the longest.
Who needs one
Anyone applying to be an individual provider, a registered partner or a registered manager. For a limited company applying with a registered manager, that is the manager. CQC will also consider disclosures in the check when assessing suitability and character.
Which type
- An enhanced DBS check with the appropriate barred list: adults' list for services for people aged 18 and over, children's list for under-18s only, both for all ages.
- If you are not a registered healthcare professional, it must be CQC countersigned. CQC says it cannot accept certificates from the DBS Update Service or third-party services such as U-check in this case.
- If you are registered with the GDC, GMC, GPhC, HCPC, NMC or Social Work England, it need not be countersigned, but you must post the original paper certificate to CQC's National Customer Service Centre in Newcastle, and tell CQC your professional body and registration number.
The 12-month rule
CQC's words: "Applications with expired DBS checks (over 12 months old) will be rejected without further review." If registration takes months and the application is returned, a certificate obtained early can expire before resubmission. Order it as soon as you have decided who the registered manager is, not before.
Where it sits in the timeline
- Decide the registered managerOrganisations and partnerships must have one. See the registered manager guide.
- Apply for the countersigned enhanced DBSVia CQC's DBS page. Identity is checked in person, which is why the Update Service is not accepted.
- Submit when the certificate arrivesWith the forms and all supporting documents in one email. Nothing can be held back.
Who this is not for. Recruitment DBS checks for care staff you employ: those follow your recruitment policy and Regulation 19, not CQC's registration DBS rules.
Questions
How long does a DBS check take for CQC registration?
CQC's DBS page says up to 60 working days. Its homecare "before you apply" page says usually around 14 days but can take longer. Plan for 60.
Can I use the DBS Update Service for CQC registration?
Not unless you are a registered healthcare professional. CQC says it cannot check identity in person through the Update Service, so for everyone else a CQC countersigned enhanced DBS is required.
How old can a DBS certificate be for a CQC application?
No more than 12 months. CQC rejects applications with older certificates without further review.
